Diaspora Organize Protest over released inec result

Nigerians in diaspora have organized a protest against the presidential election results declared by the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Yakubu Mahmood.

They noted that the recent events in the Nigerian election is an indication that the Nigerian government has no desire to give her citizens an election that is credible, free, and fair.

The protest, scheduled for today, February 28th, welcomes all Nigerians living abroad.

A notification letter on the protest reads: “Following the recent events in the Nigerian election, it is clear the Nigerian government has no desire to give her citizens an election that is said to be credible, free, and fair. Well-meaning Nigerians in the diaspora are calling the support of the public to protest the disenfranchisement of Nigerians. Our brothers and sisters in the country cannot take the responsibilities of protesting the electoral malpractices as they fear the government to abuse their human rights and massacre them again, as it occurred during the ENDSARS protest.

“The responsibility is upon us to take to the streets and protest for our families back home. We are calling on all Nigerians, Africans in the diaspora, and citizens of respective countries who empathize with our people to join us in the nationwide protest.

“WE SAY NO TO ELECTION RIGGING! LOCATION: THE NIGERIAN EMBASSY IN YOUR DOMICILE COUNTRY. DATE: TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 2023. TIME: 12:00PM (ADHERE TO YOUR COUNTRIES TIME ZONE)

“Kindly bring the following with you: The Nigerian flag (if you have one). Water bottle. -Portable Microphone. Placards & writing materials. DRESS CODE – All Black.” CONTINUE READING

Prior to now, former President Olusegun Obasanjo had alleged that officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) have been compromised to manipulate the results of the presidential election, conducted on Saturday.

Faulting the failure of the INEC to transmit the election results electronically through the use of Bimodal Voters Accreditation System (BVAS), via the INEC Server, Obasanjo said he is issuing his statement to make President Muhammadu Buhari aware of what is happening about the election.

While alleging that what was been released manually did not reflect the wishes of Nigerians which they expressed freely, Obasanjo said: “Until last Saturday night, February 25, 2023, the good and noble plan and preparation for the elections seemed to be going well. For the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), a lot of money was spent to introduce Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), and the Server for immediate transmission of results from polling units. It is no secret that INEC officials, at operational level, have been allegedly compromised to make what should have worked not to work and to revert to manual transmission of results which is manipulated and the results doctored.

“The Chairman of INEC may claim ignorance but he cannot fold his hands and do nothing when he knows that election process has been corrupted and most of the results that are brought outside BVAS and Server are not true reflection of the will of Nigerians who have made their individual choice.

“At this stage, we do not need wittingly or unwittingly to set this country on fire with the greed, irresponsibility and unpatriotic act of those who allegedly gave money to INEC officials for perversion and those who collected the blood money.”

The Federal Government will be increasing the excise tax on tobacco products from 30 per cent ad-valorem to 50 per cent

The excise duty on tobacco goods will increase from 30% ad-valorem to 50% by the federal government.  Dr. Mangai Malau, head of the federal ministry of health's noncommunicable disease division's tobacco control unit, revealed this on Tuesday, April 18, during the National Tobacco Control Budget Advocates Meeting in Abuja. Malau, who gave a presentation on "Overview of Tobacco Control Funding/Budgeting in Nigeria: Why Tobacco Control Budgeting and Funding?," claimed that the federal government's desire to reduce smoking is reflected in the tax hike.  In addition to saying that taxes must be used to pay for tobacco control, he said that if relevant parties want to address the country's tobacco control problems, they must properly implement tax laws. Malau stated "Financing is a crucial element in successfully managing tobacco and tobacco products in Nigeria. It is expressly stated in Article 26 of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, which ackn...
