Students of the Witwatersrand University in Johannesburg in South Africa stormed campus and marched to the Vice Chancellor’s office to protest increasing high cost of studying in the school.
Angry students shut down the campus starting on Wednesday in protest against the exclusion of those who cannot afford to register for the upcoming academic year and repay debt, according to an article published on Sunday by Africa News.
They disclosed that the expense of attending a South African university is rising so quickly that it is becoming intolerable for students. According to data from financial services group, Old Mutual, university students in South Africa will part with an average of $3,000 in 2023.
One of the student organizers stated that they are demanding that the university not abandon students who have demonstrated academic merit. Lungile Magagula, interim chair of the Wits University Student Forum, asserted that lack of funds was not a good enough reason to prevent students from beginning the new academic year.
The issue here is that students cannot register because of a lack of funds. The majority of students who are unable to register are academically qualified but are unable to do so due to financial constraints. And that's one of our main requirements," Magagula remarked.
Wits University students were spotted sleeping in public spaces last week as a result of complications obtaining financial aid for housing. A final-year BA law student named Onkokame Seepamore expressed worry that financial aid for housing.
