After Collecting N335,000 Fees, Edo School Of Nursing Withdraws Admission Of Student For ‘Having A Bent Posture’
SaharaReporters learned that the Edo State College of Nursing Sciences recently revoked young Precious' admission.
A Nigerian woman living with a disability named Umoru Precious has been denied entrance to education by a nursing school despite pertinent national and international rules and norms.
SaharaReporters learned that the Edo State College of Nursing Sciences recently revoked young Precious' admission.
"It's so sad that she was denied admission despite having paid N335,000 in instalments and having undergone a physical interview before receiving the admission," a source at the school told SaharaReporters.
The school was founded in 1954 by the government of the Western Region, which was in charge at the time, to educate nurses who would meet the population's medical and health needs.
The right to education is guaranteed by both national and international law, and it applies to everyone equally.
According to Nigeria's recently passed Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act 2018, everybody with a disability has the right to an education without restriction or segregation of any kind.
Additionally, it states that all public educational institutions must be managed in a way that includes and is accessible to people with disabilities.
Nigeria's National Policy on Special Needs Education was adopted in 2015. Every child has the right to free, obligatory, and basic education, according to the Child Rights Act.
The statement reads, "Every child has the right to education, a right which is essential for the enjoyment of all other human rights."
The victim spoke to SaharaReporters and denounced the school administration's behavior.
She requested assistance from human rights organizations and Governor Godwin Obaseki.
She pleaded with the public to join her in speaking out, saying, "Please, I need your help in speaking out; I got admission into Edo State College of Nursing Sciences, I started lectures on a Monday, and by Wednesday they told me to leave the school because I'm not flexible enough, that they don't want someone like me, all because I have a bent posture."
"Edo State College of Nursing Sciences is denying me my right to an education,"
Precious should visit the school to file a complaint, the official who answered the phone when SaharaReporters dialed the school's official number listed on its website. The official also noted that it was unusual for the school to revoke any student's enrollment after it had been granted.
