FIFA revokes Peru's right to host the Under-17 World Cup

FIFA announced on Monday that it had pulled the 2023 under-17 World Cup from Peru because of that nation's "inability to fulfill its commitments to complete the required infrastructure."

The 24-team competition will still be held between November 10 and December 2, according to the world football governing body, and a replacement host will be chosen soon.

Due to the Covid pandemic, the biennial tournament that was scheduled to take place in Peru in 2021 has been postponed. As guests in 2019, Brazil triumphed.

Since the governors of two Indonesian provinces wished to forbid Israel, which had made it through to the Under-20 World Cup for the first time, FIFA withdrew the tournament from Indonesia last week. The tournament was set to take place from May 20 to June 11.

FIFA said in a statement that "despite a very positive working relationship" with the Peruvian football federation, "it has been determined that there is not sufficient time at this time to secure the required investment and complete the necessary work with the Peruvian government prior to the tournament start date."

In the future, it "remains open to organizing a competition in Peru," it was stated.
