Olusegun Obasanjo, a former president, has intervened in the legal troubles facing Senator Ike Ekweremadu, a former deputy president of the Nigerian senate, in the United Kingdom due to a plot charge involving the organ harvesting of a 21-year-old Nigerian.
Even though the Enugu West Senator's action was condemnable and unacceptable, he has made contributions to the sociopolitical development of Nigeria, and the UK government tempers justice with Mercy, according to a letter dated April 3, 2023 and addressed to the Chief Clerk of the Court with the subject line "Re: Ike Ekweremadu." The former president argued that before punishing Ekweremadu and his wife, the UK government should take into account their good acts in the past as well as the plight of his sick daughter.
In the first conviction for organ trafficking under the Modern Slavery Act in the United Kingdom, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, his wife Beatrice, and their doctor Obinna Obeta will be jailed on May 5. They were found guilty of helping a 21-year-old street trader from Lagos journey to London so that he could be used for his kidney.
