The Labour Party (LP) has raised an alarm of Lamidi Apapa-led faction allegedly working to sabotage the petitions
The Labour Party (LP) has expressed concern over a Lamidi Apapa-led section that is purportedly attempting to obstruct Peter Obi, the party's presidential candidate, and other party members' court applications.
The Comrade Julius Abure-led faction claimed that Lamidi approached election tribunals in an effort to have all cases involving the party's candidates who were contesting the results of the general election in 2023, which resulted in the declaration of Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu as the winner as President-Elect, withdrawn.
Pastor Obiora Ifoh, the party's acting national publicity secretary, made the assertion.
"The evil intent of the Labour Party breakaway faction, led by suspended deputy national chairman Lamidi Apapa, continues to be made clear day by day. Just this morning, our legal team was confronted with the startling discovery that these men have advanced their plot by contacting every tribunal where our numerous candidates have filed election petitions related to the just-concluded general election.
"Their acts demonstrate that they are working against the party and to sabotage it. Will they also assert that they have a problem with the party's candidates if they say they have a problem with the party's national leadership?
What transgression have the party's candidates made that has them acting now to withdraw their cases before the tribunal?
The Labour Party's leadership is requesting that any letter from Samuel Akingbade, our national legal counsel who has been placed on administrative leave, telling the tribunals to dismiss all of our cases, be ignored.
"We are also requesting that the Presidential Election Tribunal ignore any letters from these former officials of our party requesting the withdrawal of HE Peter Obi's petition," the statement continued.
However, the Lamidi Apapa-led side has rejected the assertion, adamant that it is a ruse by Abure to win quick popular support.
