A heart-wrenching story of Professor Amos Mabayomije Ishola Awodiya, an 80-year-old Nigerian academic, has gone viral after he shared his emotional life journey in an interview with cleric Agbala Gabriel.
Professor Awodiya, who spent 48 years in Canada, returned to Nigeria with no wife, children, or personal fortune. Despite his accomplishments as a specialist in heuristic education and author of several books, he has been left with nothing.
In the interview, Professor Awodiya reflected on his career, including his appointment as a minister in 1995 and his efforts to publish the Nigerian Encyclopedia, a handwritten 2,000-page book. However, he was defrauded of 81 million naira in the process, marking the beginning of his financial struggles.
The professor's story has sparked widespread sympathy and outrage, with many people offering to assist him in his time of need. His situation has highlighted the challenges faced by many Nigerians who have spent years abroad, only to return home with little to show for their efforts.
