The Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) has given its account of the violent clash with the Nigerian Army during the Abuja International Quds Day procession on March 28th. According to the IMN, the annual event, which began peacefully at Usman Bin Affan Mosque, was disrupted by security forces who allegedly fired live ammunition at unarmed protesters.¹
The IMN claims that the procession was attacked by soldiers without provocation, resulting in multiple injuries and fatalities. A senior member of the movement, Sheikh Sidi Sokoto, stated that the soldiers used live ammunition, and many participants sustained gunshot wounds, some of which were life-threatening.
However, the Nigerian Army has presented a different account, stating that the Shiite members initiated the violence. Army spokesman Maj. Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu confirmed the confrontation, saying that the protesters became violent, disrupted law and order, and started engaging the troops.
Eyewitnesses reported that the clash occurred near Bannex Plaza in Wuse 2, where members of the IMN had gathered to mark the last Friday of Ramadan in solidarity with Palestinians. They alleged that military personnel, using armored vehicles, blocked the procession route after Jummah prayers and opened fire on demonstrators.²
The incident has resulted in widespread condemnation, with many calling for an independent inquiry into the incident and for the protection of citizens' right to peaceful assembly.
